The port and the road out of it. Liners three abreast in the Western Docks, the Bargate's lions, a roofless nave on the High Street, and the stones, cathedrals and stone villages the day trips reach. Every photograph comes from the operators running the Southampton city tour trips.

The Southampton pictures are the ones you will not find anywhere else. Holyrood Church has been open to the sky since a night in November 1940 and is now the Merchant Navy's memorial. Tudor House stands on Bugle Street with its timbers still showing. And the archive photograph of Titanic under way with tugs alongside was taken on Southampton Water in April 1912.

The port pictures are the working city. Three ships alongside in the Western Docks from the air, a coach waiting on the quay, and the long drop-off canopy at the Ocean Cruise Terminal that every arriving passenger walks under. That canopy is the first thing most visitors here ever see of England.

The rest is the itinerary. Stonehenge appears most often, because more of these tours reach it than reach anywhere else, then Salisbury Cathedral, then Windsor, then the Cotswolds and Oxford because one coach spends its whole day there. Nothing here shows a place you cannot book from this port.
